Development of Apple IPhone Applications

iphone application
Apple iPhone was a revolution when it first launched in January of 2007. Combining a mobile phone, music player and web browser was nothing new, but the iPhone's touch screen allowed it to incorporate a fully functioning web browser that was the equal of the one on your PC, rather than the cut down versions used on previous mobile phones.

Since the launch, thousands of applications have been released, but Apple at first courted controversy by refusing to allow third parties to develop applications for the iPhone. In June 2007, Apple overturned this decision and now anyone can develop iPhone applications and sell them through the Apple application store provided that they register with Apple and agree to work within certain parameters designed to ensure a consistent look and feel for applications.

The IPhone Application Software Development Kit

Apple's Software Development Kit (SDK) for iPhone applications is available free of charge to anyone who registers with Apple as an iPhone necessary licensing agreements and several helpful videos detailing aspects of application development for the iPhone. There is also a selection of sample codes for incorporation into your own applications. The SDK is essential for anyone wishing to develop iPhone applications in conjunction with Apple.

Going It Alone: IPhone Application Development Without Apple

If you want to sell your iPhone applications through Apple's application store, you can do so provided it meets the terms of the licensing agreement and you are prepared to sign over 30% of the proceeds to Apple. But some iPhone application developers prefer to dance to their own tune. If this is the case, there are books on the market that can help you do this, such as IPhone Open Application Development by Jonathan Zdziarski.

A review of iPhone Open Application Development by blogger Thomas Duff says that such "unofficial" applications are unlikely to have much appeal beyond the hacker crowd, due to trust issues among mainstream users. But reviewers praise the book nonetheless as a clear introduction to the iPhone's operating system and application development software.

However, the book came out before the launch of Apple's SDK, when hackers were the only people writing third party iPhone applications. Many reviewers on Amazon feel that the SDK has now made this book obsolete, and that the advantages of gaining official status through Apple outweigh the restrictions placed on a developer's freedom.

But if you still want to go the independent route, the book is available in both hard copy and eBook forms from the publisher, O'Reilly Media, or from Amazon.
